Gaithersburg Declares Snow Emergency, Enforces Parking Rules

Mayor Jud Ashman and City Manager Tanisha Briley have declared a snow emergency for Gaithersburg from 6 p.m. Tuesday through 6 p.m. Wednesday. The declaration follows city and state codes.

The emergency activates the city’s emergency management plan. All essential employees must report to work and stay on duty until relieved.

Vehicles must be removed from snow emergency routes, which are marked with signs. Violators may face tickets or towing at their expense. Parking restrictions will be strictly enforced. A list of emergency routes is available on the city’s website. Gaithersburg will strictly enforce no parking this side of street during snow storms.

Officials urge residents to use off-street parking when possible. This helps crews clear snow and ice more efficiently. Those parking on the street should stay close to the curb and avoid cul-de-sacs.

Property owners must clear snow and ice from sidewalks within 12 hours of the last snowfall. Officials suggest waiting until plows finish to avoid repeated shoveling.

Gaithersburg maintains nearly 93 miles of roads. Some roads within the city are handled by other agencies. Snow plowing begins once two inches accumulate. Crews prioritize primary roads, then secondary roads, neighborhood streets, and courts. Clearing all city roads once takes eight to 10 hours. Crews work around the clock until roads are clear.

Residents should keep children away from roads and high snow piles left by plows. More details on snow removal and city updates are available at www.gaithersburgMD.gov.
